What is a Medical Lien?
If you were injured in a car accident and received medical treatment at a hospital, it is likely the hospital will file a medical lien. A medical lien is filed with the County Clerk and arrives to you by certified mail. A medical lien can appear intimidating if you are not expecting it; however, it does not attach to any of your property and is simply a lien against any settlement you receive from the at-fault car insurance.
A medical lien can be beneficial to you because the medical provider will not attempt to collect payment for their services from you. Instead, the provider will wait until you reach a settlement with the insurance company and will be paid directly from the insurance company.
